Deciduous teeth, also known as primary teeth or baby teeth, are your child’s first teeth. They are the first 20 teeth that will erupt in your kiddos mouth. Baby teeth typically erupt when your child is from age six months to two and a half years old. They typically fall out by the time your child is 12 years old. Your child’s adult teeth (permanent teeth) should all come in by the time they are 21 years old. Baby teeth are so important because they help your child smile, chew, and speak. They also shape your kiddos face. They hold space in your child’s jaw to allow adult teeth to come in properly.
It is so imperative to practice healthy oral hygiene habits with your kiddo when their teeth first come in to prevent problems such as:
- Damaged or decayed baby teeth: This can cause issues with permanent teeth development, and your child’s gums can become infected or damaged permanently.
- Decay: Decay can prevent adult teeth from coming in and aligning correctly.
Although baby teeth fall out, they shape your child’s future. Teaching your child proper oral hygiene can impact your kiddo for the rest of his or her life.
According to the American Dental Association, it’s best to do the following with your little one:
- Clean your baby’s gums before baby teeth erupt with a wet gauze.
- Once teeth erupt, limit their bedtime bottle to water.
